In chapter 8, Composing in Genres, in the Bedford Book of Genres starts off by giving advice and pointers on how we should start off our writing of our first draft. While writing a first draft it is best to sit down and write for a set amount of time without stopping or any distractions. This allows you to fully write out and spill all of your thoughts, this way you can go back and reread your writing and compose a second draft with all the information that works best for your topic. As well, when you are reading and annotating the sources you have chosen, whether it be writing, videos, or any other type of source you should fully understand the information being conveyed. It is best to mark up and make notes on the source being used in your essay. After writing a first rough draft and putting together the sources that will be used to support your topic, choosing a genre to compose in is the next step. When choosing a genre you have to think back to your topic, focus on your main purpose, consider your audience and then try to narrow your choices down to three and consider each and how they would best fit your topic.
