In chapter one, Understanding Genres, of the Bedford Book of Genres informed its readers of the importance of genres and how they can change from author to author. I myself have learned just how genres break down into different groups to identify something in particular. For example, music is broken down into genres such as rap, edm, country and pop. Genres then tend to change in the way people use them and what information they are trying to get across to their audience. I never thought of it that way, thinking about how posters and videography can be a different genre of advertisement. As well, I learned that a rhetorical situation is how you can communicate a problem to your specific audience effectively. There are three rhetorical appeals- ethos, pathos, and logos. These three appeals add information to your purpose which will help persuade your audience. With ethos you are providing credibility. With pathos you rely on the audiences emotions. With logos you are using logic such as facts and evidence that connects to your purpose. Mode is how the composition is experienced and media is how it is delivered, through print, digital, and face-to-face. I also learned that there are many qualities that you should look out for in specific types of genres. There are elements in the purpose, a writer may stick to a certain style which may be their sense of details or tone. As well as the design of the composition and its sources, coming from people, books, etc. Genre is composed of many elements all in one, more than I ever knew.
